デ・キリコが1911年から1917年の間に描いた神秘的なイタリアの都市風景画の名作は、その10年後に登場するシュルレアリスム派の画家たちに影響を与えました。この作品はそんなデ・キリコの作品群のなかでは異色の存在です。ピンクの点の水玉模様の雲形定規、青と白の直線定規、直角定規などの彩色された木の製図定規がキロメートル標識らしきものの上に乱雑に積み重ねられています。その中の、大きな紙に粗雑に描かれた巨大な目が意表を突いています。デ・キリコの父親は鉄道会社で技師として働いていたため、この足場のような構造と目は、父親を抽象的に描いた肖像画ではないかとも考えられています。
