1820年代の女性のドレスで流行した、ウエストを高くとったスタイルは、同時期の男性の衣服にもある程度取り入れられました。胸部に沿うように裁断された上着と、高くとられたズボンのウエストにより足の長さを強調したこのスタイルは、多少なりとも風刺の対象となりました。19世紀、男性の衣服が進化するにつれ流行に捉われる度合いが減り、男性のアンサンブルで個性を表現する要素はいずれクラバット(ネクタイの起源となったもの)、ベスト、そして正装以外ではシャツの生地に限られるようになりました。おしゃれ好きな男性にとっては、男性の服装は「平等を示し、苦痛を与えるお揃いの制服」となったのです。
