Landscape
By the mid-1880s, Cox was convinced that his future success lay in figure painting. This landscape, dated 1883, was probably painted in the summer, possibly in Ohio, when Cox visited there, or in Pennsylvania, where he vacationed at the farm of a friend. Until donated to the Museum, the painting remained in the possession of the family of General Emerson Opdycke and his wife Lucy Stevens Opdycke, whose only child Leonard was a close friend of the artist. Cox also painted a number of portraits of members of the Opdycke family.
