이 작품은 19세기 후반에 미국 조각을 지배했던 드라마틱한 프랑스 보자르 양식의 전형입니다. 바쿠스의 여사제는 포도주의 신(神) 바쿠스에게 헌신된 음주에 빠진 여인으로 자신의 머리 위로 포도송이를 들고 왼팔에 아기를 안고 균형을 잡고 있습니다. 정력적이고 나선형의 몸매와 풍부하게 형상화된 표면은 원기 왕성한 효과를 창출합니다. 맥머니스가 이 동상을 건축가 찰스 맥킴에게 주었고 맥킴은 자신의 회사가 고안한 보스턴 국립 도서관의 안뜰에 이 동상을 두었습니다. 그러나 이 동상 인물의 “술에 취한 상스러움”에 대한 항의로 인해 맥킴은 이 동상을 메트로폴리탄 박물관에 기증하기에 이르렀습니다.
