Mrs. William F. Milton
Thayer and his wife summered in the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts in 1879 and 1880. The artist probably executed an oil sketch for this painting (collection Nelson C. White, Waterford, Connecticut) in Pittsfield at that time. The Museum's portrait was completed in 1881. Anna Ridgway Miller was the daughter of Daniel and Anna (Ridgway) Miller. She married William F. Milton in Philadelphia in 1873 and took a honeymoon trip with him around the world. Beginning in 1880, the Miltons summered at Unkamet Farm on Milton Avenue in Coltsville, outside of Pittsfield. Mrs. Milton continued to maintain this farm until 1913. After her husband's death in 1905, she resided on Fifth Avenue. She was a fellow of the Museum.
