유럽에서 처음으로 나타난 도자기 제작 노력은 16세기 말에 피렌체의 메디치 궁정 공방에서 시작되었습니다. 토스카나 대공 메디치 가문 프란체스코 1세의 후원하에 1574년경 장인들이 유럽에서 값 나가는 물건이었던 중국 청화백자를 모방하여 도자기 만들기를 시도하였습니다. 중국 및 오스만 도자기가 메디치 자기의 장식에 영향을 주었지만 공작의 작업장에서 만들어진 수많은 형태들은 이 물주전자의 경우와 같이 현대의 견고한 석기 그릇이나 금세공인들의 작품에 기인하고 있습니다. 불과 여섯 개 정도의 메디치 자기만이 잔존하는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
