오늘날 우리가 알고 있는 웅장한 메디치 궁전으로 변모하기 훨씬 전인 1436년에, 코시모 데 메디치의 피렌체 저택 앞뜰에 분수대가 비치되어 있었습니다. 석공 베토 안토니오가 분수대를 제공했고 화가 안토니오가 그 위에 있는 스피리텔로(요정이나 때로는 천사를 의미)를 도금하여 수당을 받은 것으로 기록되어 있습니다. 그 스피리텔로가 이 별난 아기인 것은 거의 확실합니다. 1429년 도나텔로가 만든 시에나 세례당의 여러 청동 천사상이 익숙한 이 조각가는, 은행업을 하는 메디치 가문이 사랑한 상업의 신 메르쿠리우스를 피렌체 사람들이 5월만 되면 반겼던 서풍 제피르와 명랑하게 어우러지도록 하였습니다.
