1936년 여름, 워커 에번스는 친구이며 작가인 제임스 에이지와 함께 미국 남부의 면재배 소작농에 관한 기사를 공동 집필하였습니다. 이 기사는 발표되지 않았지만 후에 이제 유명한 자들을 찬양합시다 (1941년)라는 표제로 출간되어 대공황 시대를 대표하는 걸작이 되었습니다. 에이지는 세 채의 농가를 취재했고 에번스는 그들의 초상 사진뿐 아니라 가옥과 가구, 의류, 토지를 자세히 촬영하였습니다. 소박한 빗자루, 낡은 면직물, 사다리 모양의 등받이 의자 등을 애정과 존경심을 갖고 촬영한 이 사진은 어느 농가에서는 모든 것이 “혀로 핥아도 될 정도로 청결했다”는 에이지의 회상을 생각나게 합니다.
