해골 모양의 걸이
주로 사람사냥을 연습하던 동남 뉴기니 지역의 케레와족에게 가장 중요하고 성스러운 것은 아지바(해골 모양의 걸이)였습니다. 이것은 납작한 투조 형태로 제작되었으며 밑부분에 사람의 해골을 걸어 전시하였습니다. 이 아지바는 조각가의 꿈에서 나타난 영혼을 형상화했다고 알려져 있습니다. 케레와 부족은 한때 거대한 공동주택에서 함께 생활했는데 족장과 부족장은 각기 사당을 가진 작은 방을 사용했고 그 안에 하나 이상의 아지바 및 성스러운 물건들을 놓아두었습니다. 부족 구성원들이 축적한 다른 해골들과 함께 관리되었던 이 아지바는 부족의 힘과 생명력을 상징합니다.
