명왕행촉도
745년, 당의 현종 황제(재위 712–756년)는후궁이었던 양귀비와 사랑에 빠져 정사를 등한시하기 시작하였습니다. 이는 33년간의 선정을 베푼 후의 일입니다. 양귀비가 총애하던 안록산 장군이 755년 반란을 일으켰을 때 양귀비는 책임을 피할 수 없었습니다. 현종 황제는 수도 서안에서안전한 촉(사천성)으로 도피할 것을 강요받았으며, 양귀비의 처형을 요구하는 반란군과 대적하게 되었습니다. 현종은 마지못해 이에 동의하고 양귀비의 처형 장면을 공포와 수치에 떨며 지켜보았고, 그 후 얼마 안 되어 퇴위당하였습니다. 이 회화는 양귀비 처형 후 침울한 황제의 수행원들을 묘사하고 있습니다. 인물들은 당의 의복을 입고 있지만 입체감 있는 형태와 안개가 자욱한 대기를 복잡하게 묘사한 풍경 양식은 12세기 중엽에 이 회화가 제작되었음을 추정하게 합니다.
