삼나무가 있는 밀밭
반 고흐는 생레미 정신병원에 입원해 있는 1년 동안 삼나무와 올리브 나무가 점점이 흩어져 있는 프로방스 전원의 특징들을 포착하는 연작 그림을 그렸습니다. 1889년 7월 2일 동생 테오에게 쓴 편지에서, 그는 그해 6월에 시작한 가장 최근의 연작 그림에 대해 이렇게 묘사하였습니다. “밀밭과 양귀비풀이 있고 색색의 스코틀랜드 격자무늬 천 같은 파란 하늘이 있는, 몽티셀리의 그림처럼 두껍게 칠한 삼나무 그림이다.” 고흐는 이 햇살이 내리쬐는 풍경을 그의 여름 작품 중 “최고”로 보고 이 구도를 세 차례나 반복하였습니다. 첫 번째는 갈대 펜으로 그린 소묘(암스테르담, 반 고흐 미술관)이고, 나머지 두 점은 그해 가을에 그린 유화입니다(런던 영국국립미술관,개인소장품).
