A Cairo Bazaar

1839
Not on view
Dauzats visited Egypt in 1830, nearly a decade before he produced this sketchlike painting on wood panel, whose surface is exceptionally well preserved. The artist’s early training as a painter of set designs for the theater is evident in the dramatic sweep of the view, the play of light and shadow, and the minarets and dome of a mosque delineated against evanescent clouds.
