1891년 말 또는 1892년 초에 르누아르는 생존하는 예술가들을 위한 파리의 새로운 박물관이었던 뤽상부르 미술관을 위해 그림을 그려달라는 프랑스 정부의 요청을 받았습니다. 르누아르는 피아노 앞에 앉은 두 소녀를 주제로 선택했고 그림 제출시 엄격한 검증이 있을 것을 알고 캔버스 다섯 개를 사용하며 해당 구성을 개발하고 개선해 나가면서 이 프로젝트에 굉장한 관심을 쏟았습니다.
