Sul finire del 1891 o all’inizio del 1892, il governo francese invitò Renoir ad eseguire un dipinto per il Musée du Luxembourg, un nuovo museo parigino dedicato alle opere di artisti viventi. Renoir scelse questo soggetto con due fanciulle al piano e, consapevole dello scrupoloso esame a cui la sua opera sarebbe stata sottoposta, dedicò un’attenzione straordinaria al progetto, sviluppando e perfezionando la composizione in una serie di cinque tele.
