Nel 1879 Renoir, che aveva partecipato alle prime tre mostre degli Impressionisti, rifiutò di partecipare alla quarta, tornando all’appuntamento più tradizionale del Salon annuale di Parigi, dove espose Madame Georges Charpentier con i figli che fu accolto con grande favore. Il quadro, commissionato dal noto editore Georges Charpentier, mostra la moglie di questi, Marguérite, che indossa un elegante abito di Charles Frederick Worth. Secondo i canoni della moda del tempo, i capelli del figlioletto di tre anni, Paul, non erano ancora stati tagliati, ed egli indossa un vestito che si abbina a quello della sorella, Georgette, raffigurata a sinistra, seduta sul cane di famiglia.
