Aunque Renoir había participado en las tres primeras exposiciones impresionistas, en 1879 se negó a figurar en la cuarta y volvió al más tradicional Salón anual, donde exhibió con gran éxito Madame Georges Charpentier y sus hijos. Comisionado por el reputado editor Georges Charpentier, el cuadro representa a su esposa, Marguérite, ataviada con un elegante modelo de Charles Frederick Worth.
