В 1879 г. Ренуар, принявший участие в первых трех выставках импрессионистов, отказался участвовать в четвертой и вернулся к более традиционной экспозиции на ежегодном Парижском салоне, где представил «Мадам Жорж Шарпантье со своими детьми», получившую всеобщее признание. На выполненной по заказу Жоржа Шарпантье картине изображена его супруга Маргарита в элегантном платье от Чарльза Фредерика Уорта. Их сын с еще неостриженными волосами, согласно моде того времени, одет под стать своей сестре Жоржетте, которая изображена слева, расположившейся на домашнем питомце.
