View of Venice

1830–45
Not on view
This panorama of Venice, in gouache on black paper, calls to mind the topographical precision afforded by photography, and was probably painted around the time of the invention of photography in 1839. The sweeping view of urban shoreline anchored by San Marco’s campanile and the commanding Doge’s Palace offers a pictorial record of modern appeal.
