The Attarouthi Treasure - Censer

500–650
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 300
The imagery—much like that of the other liturgical objects in the Attarouthi Treasure—shows a young Christ, Saint John the Forerunner, the Virgin Mary in the orant prayer pose, a deacon saint (probably Saint Stephen), and crosses. Saint John the Forerunner is identified by his long hair and beard, physical attributes associated with his time in the Judean wilderness before baptizing Christ. A memorial inscription in Greek reads, "For the sake of the repose of the soul[s] of Ertha and Stephen, children of Kyriakos."
