한련화와 “춤” 회화
파리 남서부 이시-레-물리노에 있던 마티스의 화실 내부를 보여주는 이 회화는 1912년 마티스가 모로코에서 오래 머물다 프랑스로 돌아온 후 그렸습니다. 화면 왼쪽에 목재 팔걸이 의자 일부분이 묘사되었고 오른쪽에는한련화 화병이 삼발이 화분대에 놓여 있습니다. 이 작품의 제목에서 알 수 있는 마티스의 대형 회화 춤 I(1909)의 일부분이 배경 전체를 차지하고 있는데, 현재 이 회화는 뉴욕 근대 미술관에 소장되어 있습니다. 마티스는 이 주제로 같은 크기의 회화를 두 점 제작하였으며, 첫 번째로 그린 이 작품은 스케치처럼 보이는 밝은 색조인 데 비해 두 번째 작품(모스크바 푸시킨 국립미술관 소장)은 색조가 강렬하며 배경에는 춤 II(1909– 1910년, 상트페테르부르크 에르미타주 박물관 소장)가 묘사되어 있습니다.
