This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.
Here, artist and former Dakota Indian policeman Thomas Stone Man uses the traditional visual language of pictographs to record the death of the great Lakota chief Sitting Bull. Although Stone Man was present at the tragic event, nearly thirty years passed before he created this work. Like ledger artists before him, he relived a dramatic experience through his drawing. Explanatory captions by the artist, including names of fellow policemen, amplify the work’s stark imagery.
