스리랑카 초기 불교의 전형적인 성상은 설법인스리랑카 초기 불교의 전형적인 성상은 설법인 수인을 하고서 설법하는 불좌상이었습니다. 이 불상은 요가의 명상하는 자세로 앉아 있고 바느질하지 않은 가사를 팽팽히 감고 있으며 남방불교식으로 오른쪽 어깨를 드러내고 있습니다. 불상의 두발 형태는 나발로서 석가모니가 왕자의 장신구를 버리고 삭발함으로써 물질세계를 거부한 것을 상기시킵니다. 눈에는 제작 당시 사실성을 높이기 위해 보석 또는 수정을 새겨 넣었을 것입니다. 불꽃 모양의 두상돌기(육발)는 깨달음의 경지를 나타내는 중요한 인의 하나인연기인(락샤나)입니다.
