Tray

1879
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 774
In the late 1870s, boldly scaled naturalistic motifs such as this iris design were popular in Tiffany Japanesque silver. The hammered finish seen here was introduced by Tiffany & Company in 1876 and reflected the interest in the surface textures of Japanese metalwork. The tray’s texturing was applied with a punch worked around the iris design and was not the result of the hammering up of the form. Here the hammered effect is combined with pebbling and oxidation, some of which has been lost. This round tray form, introduced in 1878–79, was available in six sizes and many ornamental schemes.
