Title screen from the Murder at the Met mobile game
«You are cordially invited to a teen murder mystery event in the Museum's new American Wing on Friday, April 20, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m.! We will investigate a ghastly murder (fictional, of course) through clues interspersed throughout the galleries and period rooms. Working in small groups and with a mobile game specifically designed for the event, you and your friends can solve the case and bring the murderer to justice!»
The murder victim, Madame X, is featured in a portrait painted by American artist John Singer Sargent in 1883–84. This portrait caused quite a scandal when it was first exhibited at the 1884 Salon in Paris, but Sargent considered it one of his greatest accomplishments.
As a high school intern here at the Met, I have walked around the new American Wing and have seen Sargent's work. Having looked closely at the portrait of Madame X, I think she is a beautiful woman who transcends her time. Now I can't wait to show off my detective prowess and discover the details of her murder.
This event is a great opportunity to explore the Met's new American Wing galleries while tapping into your inner Sherlock. The murder mystery is free and you can bring as many friends as you want! All you have to do is register online. We encourage participants to come dressed in nineteenth-century attire (see examples on our Facebook page). Don't forget to bring your thinking caps!
Check out our Facebook page for more information about the event.
