This is one of thirty-three lithographs in a book that describes popular "types" meant to represent Mexico’s diverse populations. It belongs to the nineteenth-century costumbrismo literary genre that aimed to show Mexicans in a positive light, making visible their cultural identity and instilling a sense of pride in the nation. Each print is accompanied by a lengthy description. The account here praises the porter’s strength and purpose, casting the figure as a model of good government.



Esta es una de las treinta y tres litografías de un libro en el que se describían «tipos» populares representativos de las diversas poblaciones de México. El libro se encuadra en el costumbrismo del siglo xix, un género literario que aspiraba a ofrecer una imagen positiva de los mexicanos y a visibilizar su identidad cultural e inspirar cierto sentido de orgullo nacional. Cada estampa va acompañada de una larga descripción. En esta se elogian la fuerza y la determinación del cargador, que se presenta como un modelo de buen gobierno.
