Mexico y sus Alrededores. Colección de monumentos, trajes y paisajes

1855–56
Not on view
Albums of prints illustrating the dress and customs of Mexican people were enormously popular during the nineteenth century. The titling in English, Spanish, and French below this image indicates that the series—on Mexico’s monuments, costumes, and landscapes—was intended for an international audience. Vendors sell their goods at the Sunday market near the National Palace in the heart of Mexico City. Despite its recognizable location, this is an idealized scene meant to reveal the distinctive character of Mexican dress.
