O’Keeffe conquistou reputação nos anos 1920 com suas pinturas de flores grandes, mas a partir de 1929 encontrou inspiração nas paisagens do Novo México, para onde viajava quase todos os anos (1929–46) e onde, por fim, estabeleceu-se (1949). Para a artista, os ossos de animais representam a beleza intemporal do deserto onde foram encontrados e a força duradoura do espírito americano.
