Basket
Returned to lender
This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.Geometric art is an ancient design tradition among Northwest Coast cultures. Women often learned basketry from their mothers or grandmothers, and basket makers with outstanding specialized knowledge and weaving ability were honored in the community. Mid-nineteenth century baskets such as this exceptional example stored everyday items. The geometric design is formed from colored and dyed grasses woven together.
