Glassmaking Mold

1850–1900
Not on view
This plaster-of-Paris mold has intaglio decoration in a diamond pattern. Molds such as this were used to make other, more durable molds out of metal, which glassmakers used to make pressed glass. This mold and the other glassmaking implements were found in the cellar of the Union Glass Works, Somerville, Massachusetts, which had probably bought the objects from a glassmaker in Sandwich, an active glassmaking center during the nineteenth century.
