Художник, гравер и необычайно оригинальный витражист, Бальдунг происходит из семьи юристов и врачей. В восемнадцать лет он поступил в мастерскую Дюрера в Нюрнберге. Это полотно, изначально принадлежавшее к триптиху, изображает апостола Иоанна на острове Патмос за написанием книги Откровения (эмблема Иоанна — орел). Запрестольный образ был заказан орденом святого Иоанна в Иерусалиме в Грюнен Верт, недалеко от Страсбурга, и упоминается в записи, относящейся к 1510–1511 годам, приблизительно через пять лет после того, как Бальдунг покинул мастерскую Дюрера.
