Winter (Fuyu), from the series Fashionable Amusements of the Four Seasons (Fūryū shiki no asobi)
Koryūsai was influenced by Harunobu’s style in depicting gentle, elegant women. Here a courtesan steps out on a verandah just after snowfall, as a young woman and child look on. The poem at the upper right left of this print reads:
足あとに 悋気しつとや 雪の朝
Ashi ato ni
rinki shizu to ya
yuki no asa
Don’t be jealous
about footprints—
in the morning snow.
(Trans. John T. Carpenter)
