This work of art was on loan to the museum and has since been returned to its lender.The inscriptions added to this painting help link it to worship of Jizō at Kasuga Shrine, a major religious site in the ancient capital of Nara. Jizō is held as the original form of one of the Shinto deities worshipped at Kasuga, a patron deity of one of early Japan’s most powerful families, the Fujiwara.
