How to Make a Magic Garden

Travel back in time to invent your own magical plants and herbs.
This video is part of MetKids Microscope, a series that explores the science behind the art at The Met.

In medieval Europe, people believed that some plants were magic. Nowadays, we think differently—but why let that ruin our fun?

In this activity, learn how to gather and press flowers. Then, remix and imagine what magic powers they might have!

Materials

Flowers and leaves
Two pieces of cardboard lined with wax paper
Rubber bands
Glue
Paintbrush
Notebook
Heavy book

Instructions

Gather flowers and leaves outside. Ask an adult to help you collect, so you can avoid dangerous plants.

Place your gathered plants and flowers flat between the cardboard pieces and secure them with rubber bands. Then, place a heavy book on top.

Leave them there for two to four weeks to let the flowers fully dry.

Once dried, use the pressed flowers to collage your own magic garden. Separate some of the pressed petals and leaves, rearrange them on a fresh piece of paper, and glue them down.

Jot down what kind of magic powers your one-of-a-kind, collaged flowers might have!

Reflection

How did the plants change once they dried? Did they shrink or change color? Why do you think that happened?
