Bowl with a putto holding a pinwheel, ca. 1530
Workshop of Maestro Giorgio Andreoli (Italian, Gubbio, ca. 1465–1553)
Tin–glazed earthenware (maiolica); Diam. 9 15/16 in. (25.2 cm)
Robert Lehman Collection, 1975 (1975.1.1107)
This small lustered bowl is typical of ceramics made in Gubbio in the 1520s and 1530s. The meaning of the boy playing with a pinwheel is uncertain, but it relates to imagery found on birth trays.
