Bowl
Arthur E. Baggs was hired to teach ceramics at Marblehead Pottery in 1905. When the pottery separated from the therapeutic workshops from which it was first associated, Baggs became the manager and designer. This bowl was thrown by hand on the wheel, decorated with oval circles, probably with a lathe, and covered in a mat glaze. Its geometric decoration is unusual for the pottery. More commonly objects were decorated with stylized floral or animal motifs. For other examples of Marblehead Pottery, see L.1982.137.1 and L.1982.137.4.
