当尼布甲尼撒在公元前一千纪中期下令重建古巴比伦城时,庙墙、大门及宫殿均被饰以色彩鲜艳的釉面砖画,这些画面描绘了各种出自神话、传说可辟邪的神兽及动物形像。这头狮子象征了美索不达米亚女神伊师塔的力量,它曾是古巴比伦城“游行大道”两侧墙面上描绘的约一百二十尊狮子像之一。它们的作用是保护这条神圣之路,尤其是在新年庆典期间,巴比伦的诸神雕像将穿过“伊师塔之门”,沿这一大道被抬至节日神庙。
