ライオンのレリーフ

紀元前1千年紀半ばネブカドネザル王が古代都市バビロニアの再建を命じた際、神殿の壁や、門扉、宮殿には、神話の中の守護の力を持つ神聖な野獣や動物が、極彩色の施釉レンガで描かれました。このライオンはメソポタミアの女神イシュタルの力を象徴するものであり、バビロニアの行列通りの両壁を飾った約120 頭のライオンのうちのひとつです。これらのライオンは、中でも新年にバビロニアの神々の像がイシュタル門から祝祭の行われる神殿まで運ばれる際、神聖な通りを守る役目を果たしました。
