诺曼底号客轮是法国“装饰艺术风格”的最后一次壮观的表达。这幅壁画是四幅壁画之一，为头等舱的客厅而作。航海史是其名义上的主题；大量的准历史船只和神话中的生物显然不是为了讲述一个故事，而是制造一种装饰效果。诺曼底号上的乘客所支付的交通费不及他们为享受特殊氛围而付出的金钱，这个客厅就是一座魅力的殿堂。此处镜面般的光泽出自彩镶玻璃工艺，也就是将装饰花纹绘制在玻璃板的背面，然后在安装玻璃板时使其正面朝向房间。
