在中国人的民间想象中，托钵僧、术士和神秘的隐士常被认为是“活罗汉”（即佛教中能显神通的圣人）的化身。当政府的腐败无能（例如明末时）已经危及到社会秩序时，这种对救世主的迷信就愈加普遍。此图是吴彬现存最早的作品之一。吴彬所画人物沿袭古风，并按照前人传统将罗汉描绘为奇特怪异，不同流俗的人物，怪诞夸张的容貌衬托出他们内在的灵性本质。吴彬这幅看似诙谐的画作似要表达一个严肃的主题：罗汉们表面看来不完美的外表之下，可能藏有圣洁的本心。
