Gift basket
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.Fine-work gift baskets such as this vibrant example are associated with the Wappo and the Coast Miwok peoples in what is now Napa Valley and Marin County, California. They are highly regarded for their artistic qualities, gifted at special tribal life events, such as marriages. Many were also made for a Euro-American market—a critical means of support for Indigenous communities and avidly collected outside of them—especially in the early twentieth century.
