Alphabet game in book form
Long, thin game box carved of solid ash in the shape of a small book., The sliding lid is also cut from solid ash, with "GR" carved in the top surface. Otherwise, undecorated, with five raised bands on the spine. Includes eleven ivory dice with letters inscribed on all sides with a black colorant for contrast, and ten blank bone disks with rounded edges. Handmade and manufactured games for children and adults housed in book boxes, such as card games, dominoes, word games, chess/checkers, etc. have been popular since at least the 19th century and remain so today. This simple book box manages to beautifully capture the essential aesthetic elements of a leather binding from the period, adding interest and value to the enclosure.
