«Valentin de Boulogne: Beyond Caravaggio is now installed—and beautifully so, thanks to The Met's designers and lighting experts. This exhibition offers a revelation to the non-initiate and a unique occasion for those who, for years, have looked at, studied, and been fascinated by the work of Caravaggio and the great painters of the successive generation.»

I have had the pleasure of going around the galleries with colleagues and visiting scholars, all of whom remark: "How is it that this has never been done before?" and "How great that The Met is doing this." Had it been a book, the show would have been purchased and avidly read by a handful of scholars and students. (Lucky for them there is an accompanying catalogue.)

The exhibition—on view through January 16, 2017—gives everyone the opportunity to experience what all the fuss is about, and to understand why so many of my colleagues have considered this artist to be one of the outstanding figures of 17th-century painting.
