Designer Elvira Mary Courbould [E. M. C.] British
Not on view
Folded paper pattern for embroidery, part of a series of 12 that might have been part of a book of embroidery designs, possibly designed by Elvira Mary Courbould. This type of books would be purchased for women to engage in needlework activities and embroidery at the home, decorating a variety of textiles for interiors or to be used in the making of dresses for the members of the household. This plate, titled "Black-Spotted Nemophilia: Blotting Book", contains a branch with offsetting large leaves and black-spotted nemophilia flowers and flower buds, which was meant to be embroidered on to a blotting book.
