Basin
Not on view
The form of this impressive basin (lebrillo), with a flat bottom and flared sides, relates to Hispano-Islamic pottery traditions. The artist has adapted the familiar two-headed eagle of the European Hapsburg dynasty to a blue-and-white design scheme inspired by Chinese porcelain. The visible convergence of far-flung artistic traditions in this unusual object highlights the global processes that contributed to the formation of a distinctive local ceramic style.
