Sir Robert Walpole acquired a seventeenth-century copy of Raphael's "School of Athens" fresco at the Vatican, and hung it in the Common Parlour at Houghton Hall. This was among the works bought by Catherine the Great in 1779, and is now at the Hermitage, St. Petersburg.
