Illumination in the Form of a Vase
Not on view
A tiny Persian inscription jotted along the lower margin by a later owner and connoisseur of this work, which reads gul-i hazar hulha (“flower of a thousand flowers”), recognizes the artist’s ambition to make this decorative drawing a marvel of nature and imagination. Serrated saz leaves curve to create the outline of a fantastical flowering vase, which bursts with lotuses, peonies, and other blossoms interlocked within leaves and stalks. At the base, a row of rocks with plants growing out of them pays a deferential nod to realism, from which this fanciful composition is otherwise far removed.
