Snow

Jean-François Raffaëlli French

Not on view

Like his Impressionist colleagues, Raffaëlli worked to convey a variety of weather effects. Here he renders the dark, heavy winter sky with even, grey aquatint while incorporating the reserve (or bare paper) for the snow in the foreground and on the roof of the house. On the surface of the pond, Raffaëlli’s use of soft ground etching yields to the depiction of reflections on the gleaming water.
