Durbar of Emperor Akbar Shah II

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 693

Akbar II (r. 1806–37), who held little real power as the British tightened their control of India, still engaged in public ceremonies and processions. Here he is seated in durbar, or formal audience, upon a throne that features peacocks on the canopy, referring to the famous imperial throne of the seventeenth-century Mughal emperor Shah Jahan.
