Six Guineas Entrance and a Guinea a Lesson

Artist and publisher Paul Sandby British

Not on view

In this circular design, the star dancer Gaetan Vestris wears a suit and high toupée wig, stands with elbows bent and toes turned out to give a dancing lesson to a goose. Behind at left, a man sits on a chair and plays the violin. The interior is plain room with a wooden floor. According to Sandy's biographer, William Sandby, the print responded to an incident when Sandby and Vestris arrived simultaneously at the home of a fashionable student to give lessons in drawing and dance, but Vestris was given preference, annoying the artist.
