A Goldsmith in his Shop

Petrus Christus Netherlandish

On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 953

This captivating painting, full of meticulously rendered details, features the interior of a goldsmith's shop. The counter opens directly onto the street, which is reflected in the convex mirror at right. Seated at his bench, the goldsmith is clearly the focus of the picture, which was likely commissioned by the goldsmith's guild in Bruges. The shelves are lined with secular and ecclesiastical vessels, jewelry, and many of the raw materials employed by the goldsmith as part of his craft. Rings feature prominently among the objects on display. A box of finger rings, presented on rolled sheets of parchment, sits on the cloth-draped shelf near the goldsmith's left shoulder. The fashionably dressed couple inside the shop watches as the goldsmith weighs a wedding band.
